Introducing: Park Pass Coffee
This Denver-based company is on an extraordinary mission
What does a great consumer brand look like these days? And how might someone go about creating one from scratch?
The latter question is one that I see many startup entrepreneurs struggling with (not just coffee-preneurs), and when they seek out my advice, the first thing that I tell them is to start with an identity. One that people can easily recall and recognize. Because everything else follows from that exact point of origin.
It certainly helps to have an engaging story to go along with that identity. And our featured roaster Park Pass Coffee has one of the best stories Iโve come across recently in the specialty coffee world.
It starts with a simple premise. A Denver-based roastery, founded by Grant Newsome and Sam Schippel, on a mission to preserve our local and national parks.
The duo initiated an online crowdfunding campaign to find early support, before launching their venture in September of last year.
Since then, the company has released a set of coffees named after a specific place that inspires curiosity and adventure: Saguaro in Arizona; the Badlands in South Dakota; Boundary Waters in Minnesota.
So how does the company meet its mission? By giving back 10% of each sale toward charities and programs dedicated to conserving wildlife and expanding accessibility to these parks. Among many other notable initiatives. And the company has already donated nearly $1,400 towards these efforts. Impressive.

Today we're beyond thrilled to support Grant and Sam in the early stages of their journey by offering their signature Rocky Mountain Blend on our marketplace.
This full-bodied blend has a medium roast profile with notes of dark chocolate ๐ซ, hazelnut ๐ฐ, and lemon meringue pie ๐ that combine to produce bright acidity and a rich, creamy mouthfeel.
It's an easy-drinking cup that's perfectly suited for busy mornings.
And with a view of the majestic Rockies ๐ you can start your day with some inspiration to get you going through your daily activities ๐ดโโ๏ธ
This is one of the few blends we've featured on our marketplace. That's meant to be both accessible and appealing to a wide range of tastes.
Park Pass roasts weekly and ships same day if the order is placed before 3pm Mountain Time (MST).

Mentions: Espresso State of Mind (ESOM)
What would happen if you placed two baristas inside the Octagon to engage in a battle of the fists?
This is an absurd question, of course, designed to amuse. But if you've never attended a latte art competition, it's an appropriate metaphor that can help you visualize what it might be like.
And if you're curious enough to actually experience it in person, there's no better place to start than attending one of the events organized byย Espresso State of Mind.
ESOM, which was founded by NYC-based Javi Alvarez, is responsible for staging some of the buzziest "throwdowns" in major cities across the country. Where baristas compete one-on-one to create the most intricately designed latte art you're likely to witness anywhere. Via tournament bracket where one person remains standing in the end.
ESOM's events are always brimming with youthful energy. Great music. Lots of camaraderie between competitors. And raucous support from friendly crowds.
It's an experience to say the least. And a phenomenon that's sure to become more mainstream in the coming years.
ESOM's first throwdown of the year is scheduled to occur on Sunday, February 19 at Yafa Cafe in Brooklyn, NY. With baristas competing for a $500 prize.
Attendance is free for all spectators. So I encourage you to go and show your support. Your favorite barista will thank you and may even offer you a fancy cup the next time you see them.
